Greater Manchester Rail Policy 2012-2024
08/05/2012Transport for Greater Manchester SearchResearchItemsIn some instances fares do not reflect the level of service that passengers receive and in other cases there are large anomalies in fare structures. We need to explore the potential impacts on patronage and revenue of changing the level and structure of fares. Any changes to fare levels should be considered in the context of the wider investments in improvements to rail services that passengers will see. Regarding freight, the report states: “There is a growing recognition of the important role that freight plays in both sustaining the economic life of Greater Manchester and in decongesting the road network so that the capacity can be used for other, more valuable activity. Sufficient capacity needs to be provided on the rail network to both accommodate existing levels of freight and to accommodate future growth, both at existing terminals and those which may come about as a result of associated industrial developments.”
