Rail staff ‘told not to offer cheapest tickets’ – Another shocking example of the complexity of the rail fares system and the confusion it causes passengers. An undercover investigation at First Great Western revealed that station staff were not offering the cheapest available tickets because some of those options (such as split ticketing) were again DfT rules – which the DfT denies. Which one is correct is neither here nor there – interviewee David Sidebottom (from Transport Focus) hits the nail on the head by saying that the example just highlights the ticketing system is too complex and puts the onus on the passenger to know what they want. – SB
