We need leaders with deep expertise

George Muir muses that it is “no wonder so many crass decisions are made” when in the industry lacks deep railway knowledge in top positions. He says: “At Department for Transport we have, fortunately, Pete Wilkinson, who does know what he is talking about, but his boss as director general of the Rail Group will shortly be a job-sharing duo called Payne and Hannant who have a deep knowledge of railways?, transport?, engineering? No. Education.” Muir makes a plea to join up policy on the railway with operational strategy and get people there with deep expertise.
