Professor Simon Saunders from Real Wireless provides some useful suggestions for overcoming the barrier created by the considerable capital investment cost required to implement wireless onboard trains. He says that planning is key to recoup that initial investment, by combining revenue from both passenger-facing services such as WiFi and operational benefits to deliver positive net value. Saunders explains that “for those taking into account the operational efficiencies and cost-saving benefits of wireless infrastructure, the costs change from an expensive overhead that helps meet customers’ expectations, into a sound investment that opens up new revenue streams”.
