Technical developments are an opportunity for rail to grow

Is rail doing enough to secure its future? - David Briginshaw highlights some interesting viewpoints in his Editor-in-Chief’s editorial relating to automatic vehicle operation. Sarwant Singh (a senior partner at Frost & Sullivan) spoke at a recent Hitachi event about his belief that all major urban high-capacity transport networks will have switched to automatic operating within the next 15 years. In the same month, DB’s Chief Technology Officer Josef Stoll spoke at a conference in Amsterdam where he said electric cars, car sharing and automatic cars could lead to a shift from rail to road. Briginshaw says we need to look at future technical developments as an opportunity to enhance and reshape rail transport. - SB
