Rio Tinto rolls out driverless heavy-haul system
Rio Tinto’s $A 940 million AutoHaul driverless heavy-haul system in the Pilbara region of Western Australia has now been completed.
200 locomotives haul 2.4km-long (1.5-mile) trains along the 1,700km (1,056-mile) network, delivering iron ore from 16 mines to the ports of Dampier and Cape Lambert.
The automatic trains, which are monitored remotely from an operations centre in Perth, have already travelled more than 4.5 million km since they were first deployed last year.
Locomotives are fitted with safety systems including collision detection systems, automatic train protection technology and on-board video cameras.
