Rail’s share of the freight market within the EU has fallen since 2011 despite the EU contributing 28 billion Euros to rail projects between 2007 and 2013 and a concerted effort since 1992 to encourage a shift of freight from road to rail. Rail freight is suffering in the UK currently, with the ORR’s statistics released on May 19 showing that the amount of freight lifted by rail last year fell by 22%. This is not just down to the decrease in coal, but also a decrease in international traffic among others.
