Patronage on Britain’s railways rose by almost 7% in the final quarter of 2014, with growth hitting a five-year high, according to the latest statistics. The biggest rise in passenger kilometres travelled was on intercity routes (a 6.9% increase) closely followed by London and South East on 6.8%. Regional routes witnessed a 5% increase. Passenger Transport says that revenue climbed even higher, between 8.3-9.6%. “Judging these provisional figures on the government’s preferred measure of passenger kilometres travelled, this was the best set of growth figures for fully five years: the last time that national rail demand rose by more than 6% was in the spring of 2010” reports analyst Chris Cheek. - PP
