Operators make rolling stock procurement decisions without energy consumption data

Comparing rolling stock energy consumption - Laurent Dauby (Rail director at the International Public Transport Association) makes the worrying point that in 2013, 40% of operators made light rail and metro system procurement decisions without any information on the energy consumption of what they were buying. Of those, 95% said they were planning to include this as a requirement in their future tenders though. Dauby says the problem is there is no ready-to-use tool or method to calculate rolling stock energy consumption for comparative purposes. A research project known as Osiris has just been completed to analyse technical and operational energy efficiency options, with further development planned to create a consistent measure for energy efficiency. - SB
