Bad times just around the corner – In its Railtalk column, MR covers the latest changes at Network Rail and makes some suggestions for a way forward: “Identify the 20% of essential, politically sensitive, projects and throw 80% of what project management and engineering resources are available at them. This applies in particular to signalling renewals, where there must be an absolute ban on further de-scoping, re-scoping and re-working until delivery of the main projects is assured”. The column makes the sensible point that NR’s problems are not about structure but about the “diminishing cadre of experiences railway people who can make things happen”. A belief shared by many in the industry. - SB
