Maglev technology for the UK?

Britain’s silver bullet - Off the back of Government giving the green light for a nine-month feasibility study into the viability of driverless steel carts powered by Maglev technology transporting freight through underground tubes under towns, Gemma James, a partner at Mundays LLP, explains how it could affect rail, including the sector needing to plan for losses. Predicting reliability and safety will be hard, she says, while there are a number of legal factors to consider. While some companies are investigating the opportunity, there is also a big financial risk. But should it be built, then the effect on rail could be significant is the ultimate argument.
