Nick Richardson, technical director at transport consultancy Mott MacDonald, examines possibilities for improving rail services along the South Coast, particularly in the light of the dispute affecting Southern services.
He proposes two local stopping services every hour between Southampton and Portsmouth, rather than one, and more radically a tram-train over the Itchen Bridge into Southampton.
“Creating a proper east-west route would be hugely beneficial and prompt the economic growth and housing to which government aspires,” he writes.
