Mystery traveller Alex Warner says that passenger behaviour is partly to blame for travelling by train no longer being “magical” and asks if there is anything train operators can do to recapture the romance. He blames the TOCs that have scrapped Quiet Coaches: “Consider too the beastly surroundings you have created which have spawned such selfish behaviour – spread the cheapo tickets across the train instead of in one carriage and make the experience less impersonal and more romantic, so that customers feel they are going on an adventure and have a sense of occasion, rather than just regarding their trip as an extension of their home or office and playing out their sad lives in public for all to witness.”
