China: China still out in front

By April 2015, China's high speed network had reached 19,245km - a feat of construction unequalled in the history of the modern railway. It does however echo the spirit of the construction of the Great Wall of China, built between 700BC and 200BC,

Elsewhere, Saudi Arabia's  HSR is due for completion in 2016 and may be operational in 2017. Neighbouring UAE says it hopes to have HSR running between Abu Dhabi and Dubai by 2020.

In California, the HSR between Los Angeles and San Francisco should be running by the end of the 2020s. By 2050, RGI expects HSR to be active on every continent. Whereas typical 45 minute commuter journey in the 1980s might have covered 60km,it is now possible to cover 160km n the same time. The best start-to-stop speed on the Tohoku Shinkansen is 267kph.
