High Output (HO) is part of Network Rail’s Infrastructure Projects function. Together with the RMT and industry partners, HO has worked to make the taking and giving up of engineering access significantly safety and more efficient, reportedly eliminating the risk of protection staff being struck by a train at night.
The project has introduced a number of technological innovations that also create a far simpler communication chain (reducing the length of the phone chain from 17 phonecalls to fewer than four, reducing the chance of error).
The success of the trials has led to the initiative being extended to all systems deployed by HO. And other parts of Network Rail are showing an interest in using the same ideas.
NR says the project has delivered a tangible improvement in the safety of track staff and the team has shown a real determination and commitment to improving safety over the three years the project has been in development. There is huge potential for sharing the benefits elsewhere in the industry.

“This seems to be a very impressive way of improving a known safety hazard.”
