Network Rail is lengthening platforms at Edinburgh Waverley to enable new trains and ScotRail’s High Speed Trains to serve the station.
Platforms 5 and 6 at the east of the station, and Platform 12 at the west, will be lengthened. Escalators on Platform 11 were due to close on September 2 and re-open early next year when the longer Platform 12 opens.
Network Rail programme director Rodger Querns said: “Completing such a significant piece of engineering work in one of the country’s busiest stations is a big challenge.”
The work is being delivered as part of the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP) and Intercity Express Programme (IEP) schemes.

A similar improvement at Waterloo station as Platforms 1-4 are closed for 3 weeks so that Network Rail can lengthen the platforms and platforms 20-24 (former Eurostar terminal has opened but only temporary) until its closed again for more works. Until early next year that the former Eurostar terminal will reopen permanently and to allow longer trains to use the former terminal that once was home to Eurostar before they moved to St. Pancras International 10 years ago.
