Long-distance passenger services could be complemented by ‘last mile’ delivery using e-cargo bikes for transport of parcels, the Rail Innovation Group suggests.
A new report from the non-profit organisation explores the potential for expanding rail’s use to facilitate faster and more sustainable delivery of packages.
Parcels as Passengers says: “Achieving and expanding this bike-rail-bike-home concept would help to decarbonise the wider logistics sector, and it would reduce congestion and air pollution in towns and cities across the country.”
The RIG says the approach is already being taken in some areas.

An electric powered tricycle with a large lockable cargo box has been a regular sight on the streets of central Norwich for the last few years. Parcels arriving by train 🚆 can easily be delivered all day long.
