GB Railfreight has been authorised by the Office of Rail and Road to place its fleet of Class 69s into service.
The operator applied for authorisation on April 5 and received confirmation on May 26 for the diesel electric locomotives, which have been rebuilt from Class 56s.
A total of ten locomotives have been converted by Progress Rail at its Longport facility, near Stoke-on-Trent. Authorisation has been granted for a fleet of 16 should GBRf choose to exercise an option in its contract with Progress Rail for a further six.
The first Class 69 (69001) commenced testing at the Severn Valley Railway in February, while 69002 was then unveiled at Eastleigh in BR Blue Logo livery in early May.
