A deal has been agreed with the three largest freight companies to transfer 105 leaseholds at key rail freight sites to Network Rail.
NR has agreed the deal with DB Schenker for 87 sites, Freightliner for 15 sites, and GB Railfreight for three.
Described as a self-financing transaction, it represents the first substantive change in the strategic management and development of Britain’s rail freight estate since privatisation.
