ScotRail and Inverness Airport remain upbeat about the number of passengers passing through the Highland station, which celebrates its first anniversary this month.

More than 50,000 passenger journeys were made at Inverness Airport interchange last year.

The £14 million station, constructed by Network Rail, is located between Inverness and Nairn and meets current ‘Access for all’ mobility requirements, with step-free access to both platforms via a lift for passengers and cyclists.

The station is also a commuting option for locals travelling by rail into the nearby city centre, although RAIL’s former fares and services expert Barry Doe led the criticism of the 18-minute (uncovered) walk from the station platform to the terminal building (The Fare Dealer, RAIL 975).

Contributors to RAIL’s Open Access pages also suggested that passengers would be far more likely to use the half-hourly bus service or a taxi, rather than a less frequent rail service.
