The 15 May 2022 timetable change saw the retirement of Southern's veteran fleet of Class 455/8 EMUs. The previous day, the 14th of May, the famed Branch Line Society (BLS) ran a farewell railtour named "The Metro Marauder".
The Class 455/8s were built between 1982 and 1984. by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL)'s Holgate Road-York carriage works. These include all 46 units formerly operated by Southern (allocated to Stewarts Lane depot) and 28 allocated to South Western Railway (at Wimbledon depot).
