Vivarail goes forth with fast-charging batteries

Glasgow Central to Barrhead on Vivarail’s battery-powered Class 230 train, during special demonstration runs to showcase the firm’s pioneering fast-charging technology.

Alongside Porterbrook’s HydroFLEX hydrogen-powered Class 799, the former London Underground D-Stock unit formed part of Network Rail’s and the Rail Delivery Group’s We Mean Green exhibition at Glasgow Central. On November 5, Prince Charles visited the trains and met with industry figures to discuss environmentally friendly technology.

Vivarail announced during the international climate conference that the Railroad Development Corporation, a Pittsburgh-based rail investment company, had ordered a second two-car unit following successful test runs with a Vivarail Class 230 in Pennsylvania. This was the first ever export of a battery train from the UK to the United States.
