A Network Rail survey has shown that while two-thirds of the public recognise rail as a ‘greener’ mode of transport, 73% of this group still primarily use cars to get around.
Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 67% said they would consider using the train instead of a car for a day out with friends or family, and 55% would also consider using the train for travel to a big music or sports event. The survey was carried out as part of the industry-wide ‘We Mean Green’ campaign.

This conclusion may seem like a paradox at first. Whereas when it comes to passenger rail services in UK and anywhere in Europe and elsewhere in the world, competition is not (and never has been) completely equal between rail and road. So it is absolutely necessary to level the playing field by creating a solid national strategy for passenger transport by rail. Fast and comfortable trains backed by determined rail operators must once again dominate the choice of people inclined to travel with their own cars. Dr Güntürk Üstün
