NR completes latest phase of GWML electrification

The latest phase of the Great Western Main Line (GWML) electrification programme was completed on April 11, following the closure of the Bristol-Bath section of the route from April 2.

The programme involved lowering the tracks at Keynsham to create room for overhead catenary, while retaining the station’s historic footbridge. After this was completed platforms at the station were modified to compensate for the lowered tracks.

At Oldfield Park track renewals took place and foundations for catenary masts were installed on the route. Some 10,000 tonnes of ballast and 1,500 new sleepers were laid during the closure, which involved the use of seven engineering trains
