Eight trains fail to observe speed restrictions on South Wales Main Line in one day

At least eight trains failed to observe blanket speed restrictions imposed on the South Wales Main Line in January.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is looking into the incidents which occurred at two locations between 1133 and 1408 on January 27.

Speed restrictions were in place between Neath and Swansea and Bishton and Newport because of forecast high winds and an associated hazard from high-risk trees respectively.

RAIB said: “Although some of these trains travelled at speeds significantly above the imposed restrictions, there were no reported consequences.”

A Safety Digest will be published in the next few weeks.
