Electrified test track work at Long Marston begins as part of Porterbrook upgrades

New track being laid at Long Marston. PORTERBROOK.

Construction of a two-mile electrified test track has begun at Porterbrook’s Long Marston Innovation Centre.

Trains will be able to run at up to 50mph along the track, which will also be capable of supporting European Train Control System in-cab signalling in future.

So far roads have been resurfaced, while upgraded lights and a new security system have been installed. Enhanced training and office facilities are also in place, while old storage buildings have been replaced with similar structures to maintain the site’s heritage.

Porterbrook CEO, Mary Grant, said: “We’re pressing ahead with our ambitious plans at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre, investing over £75m to deliver exceptional facilities for our customers and manufacturing partners. With these significant upgrades we can provide the best level of service and a full turnkey solution for new rolling stock entering service.”

The design, supply, installation and commissioning of all electrification and signalling will be done by Siemens Mobility, which will also introduce a Rail Charging Converter (RCC).

RCC plugs directly into the local power grid using an 11kV charge, cutting delivery times for traditional electrification projects from seven years to as little as 18 months. The firm’s overhead line equipment solution, Sicat SX, will provide span lengths of more than 110 metres between supports, a 50% increase compared to standard solutions.

Rob Morris, Joint UK&I CEO and Managing Director for Rail Infrastructure, Siemens Mobility said: “This project is a testament to collaboration, integrating track, signalling, and trains together to transform rail travel and transport for Britian. As a technology leader, Siemens Mobility is excited to be playing a key role in providing game-changing electrification and signalling solutions that will reduce overall costs, lower carbon emissions and enhance efficiency.”

Nearly seven miles of track will be installed, which includes sidings. Design, supply and installation, as well as modifications to Long Marston’s existing road layout and level crossings, will be completed by Trackwork.

  • Long Marston will again be hosting Rail Live in 2025. The event will be held on June 18-19, with registrations to attend the event opening next week at www.raillive.org.uk.
