Network Rail is to present proposals to replace a part of foot crossings over the North Wales Main Line with a ramped footbridge.
A public information evening is to be held at Abergele Town Council’s officers on Wednesday February 26.
Network Rail has identified that two crossings at Pensarn – Pen Uchaf and Ty Gwyn – both need replacing before capacity along the route can be increased.
There have been reported of six near-misses and 14 incidents of misuse across both crossings in the last two years, as well as two fatalities in 2019. The crossings are used by dog walkers, families and holidaymakers, while the line speed is 90mph.
Emma Osborn, Network Rail Wales and Borders Passenger Strategy Director, said: “The additional services will also increase the safety risk at the crossings. This is why we must permanently close both crossings and give people a safer way to cross over the railway.”
Transport for Wales’ Planning and Performance Director, Colin Lea, added: “Many crossings have been around for a very long time but are no longer fit for purpose with the speed and frequency of trains using the network.
“By delivering this work, it will allow for an uplift in rail services along the North Wales coast, which will have massive benefits to the local economy and improve access to key tourist locations and educational establishments along the route.”
Last year, the Welsh government confirmed plans to increase services along the North Wales Main Line by 50% in 2026. Two other crossings at Prestatyn also need closing.
The information evening runs from 1630-1930 at Abergele Town Council offices on Llanddulas Road (LL22 7BT). More information can be found at networkrail.co.uk/pensarn.
