Public consultation planned for Manchester Oxford Road upgrades

Network Rail has launched a public consultation on ambitious plans to modernise Manchester Oxford Road Station although it says it is likely going to have to shut the station for two years in order for it to complete the works.

Key proposals include extending platforms to accommodate longer trains, leading to a significant increase in passenger capacity.

Oxford Road welcomed just over 5 million passengers last year and is the third busiest station in Greater Manchester. It recently completed a £2.4 million upgrade to its ticketing barriers, with the ticket office moved to the front.

Now, Network Rail has opened a consultation on its bigger plans as it aims to upgrade track and signalling which it hopes will reduce congestion. The plans also include 900 metres of new track being laid as well as installation of new overhead line equipment.

Accessibility will be significantly improved with the construction of a new footbridge equipped with lifts, providing step-free access to all platforms. Existing platforms will also be widened and resurfaced, and existing lifts will be upgraded. Network Rail has warned however that the station could close for upto two years under current estimates as well as increasing usage at surrounding stations including Piccadilly and Victoria whilst the station is closed.

Pete Winters, Senior Project lead for Network Rail, said: “The Manchester Oxford Road Remodelling Scheme consultation is an opportunity for the public to hear about our exciting plans for the station, which include platform, track and signalling upgrades, alongside improvements to station accessibility.

“We want to bring all station users, as well as the local community with us on the journey of improving this important station. I urge the local community and station users to let us know their thoughts so that they can be considered as the designs progress.”

The current designs have taken into consideration the historic value of some of the station’s building including the Grade II listed station building itself and the platform canopies. Network Rail also confirmed that a second round of consultation that focuses on environmental concerns as well as construction will take place in October.

Councillor Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council said: “We have said for a long time that Oxford Road Station needs a range of improvements from easing the congestion, increasing capacity, improving reliability and ensuring that the station is accessible for all commuters.

During this period, a virtual consultation room and feedback form will be available alongside drop-in sessions. Dates for the sessions can be found below.
