'Great milestone' as Northumberland Line registers 50,000 passenger journeys in first month

More than 50,000 passenger journeys have been made on the Northumberland line in its first month.

The route between Newcastle and Ashington welcomed customers for the first time since 1964 on December 15 after a £298.5 million project to restore services.

This includes more than 3,500 on its opening day and 16,000 in the first week.

Paul Henry, Programme Manager for the route, said: “It has been fantastic to welcome thousands of passengers on board after we spent years planning and preparing for the opening.

“The line is already making such an impact in the region and opening up new opportunities for so many people.”

Glen Sanderson, leader of Northumberland County Council, described the number as a “great milestone”, adding that it “shows just how much need there was for this line”.

He continued: “We're looking forward to more stations opening in the near future which will no doubt increase passenger numbers even further.”

So far Seaton Delaval is the only intermediate station on the Northumberland line, with trains also calling at Manors on the East Coast Main Line.

New stations at Newsham, Bedlington, Blyth Bebside and Northumberland Park are under construction; the last is set to replace Manors on the timetable once complete.

Two daytime services per hour run Monday-Saturday before the schedule drops to hourly in evenings and on Sundays. Northern Class 158s are used on the route.
