Great Northern trains running between Moorgate and Finsbury Park are now being controlled by in-cab signalling.
The European Train Control System (ETCS) is now being used along GN’s ‘Northern City Line’, which serves Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage via the Hertford Loop, with lineside signals along the route set to be completely turned off in 2025.
Oliver Turner, Head of Digital Signalling at Govia Thameslink, said the new system will allow for a more consistent, punctual service.
“It’s hard to overstate the challenge of moving to ETCS and, the significance of reaching the point where every train on our route into Moorgate is controlled this way,” he said.
“We are pleased with how the new system is working and we are working with Network Rail and Siemens Mobility colleagues to continually review and improve how we operate it.”
The next tests of ETCS on the East Coast Main Line will take place between Welwyn Garden City and Hitchin over the weekend of November 30 and December 1.
