Merseyrail offers a swansong tour for Class 507s

Merseyrail and the Branch Line Society have announced ‘The Wirral Swansong’ charter as a farewell to the Class 507 electric multiple units, which are being withdrawn after more than 45 years of service

The train, comprising two three-car ‘507s’, is set for September 15. It starts at Hooton, and then runs via Chester, Hooton, Ellesmere Port, Hooton, Rock Ferry, Liverpool Central, Kirkdale EMU Depot, Liverpool Central Reversing Siding and Birkenhead North to New Brighton.

After a break, the train continues back to Hooton via Birkenhead North EMU Depot, Bidston Hoylake, West Kirby, Liverpool Lime Street, Birkenhead Central Carriage Siding and Rock Ferry.

Proceeds from the trip will be donated to local charities, supported by Merseyrail. Fares are just £35.07, but tickets must be purchased in advance.

A final farewell trip is being planned by Merseyrail, which is still to be confirmed. 507001, now in retro BR livery, is set to be preserved after its working life with Merseyrail ends.
