Balfour Beatty has commenced construction on a state-of-the-art £10.5 million wheel lathe facility in Holyhead. The new facility, developed in partnership with Transport for Wales, will revolutionise train wheel repair services in the region.
By installing a modern automatic wheel lathe, Balfour Beatty aims to significantly improve train availability and reduce disruptions for passengers. The project is expected to generate cost savings of nearly £30,000 by eliminating the need for subcontracting services. Piling works are now under way, and the wheel lathe itself, currently being manufactured in Germany, is scheduled for installation in early 2025.
