Glenfinnan Viaduct biodiversity project completed

Glenfinnan Viaduct. NETWORK RAIL.

A two-year initiative to enhance the natural habitat near the iconic Glenfinnan viaduct has been successfully concluded. Network Rail and Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) invested £300k to improve biodiversity in the area, planting trees and installing deer fencing to protect vital habitats.

The project, located within Scotland's endangered Atlantic rainforest zone, has helped balance the impact of tree removal on the railway.

Liam Sumpter, Network Rail Scotland Managing Director said: “We’re delighted to have worked with FLS to protect and enhance Scotland’s unique natural environment.

“To date, this has been the most ambitious biodiversity enhancement project undertaken by Network Rail in Scotland.”
