A significant milestone has been reached in the implementation of digital in-cab signalling on the East Coast Main Line. Govia Thameslink Railway’s Great Northern Class 387/1 Electrostar and DB Cargo’s Class 66 loco have successfully completed dynamic ETCS (European Train Control System) testing.
The testing, conducted at Network Rail’s Rail Innovation and Development Centre in Melton, involved evaluating the trains' performance in various operational scenarios. This is a crucial step in preparing these fleets for future ETCS deployments on the East Coast Main Line.
The collaboration between Network Rail, Govia Thameslink Railway, Porterbrook, DB Cargo, Alstom, and Siemens Mobility has been instrumental in achieving this milestone. Both trains will now undergo further testing to ensure fault-free operation before being fully integrated into the digital signalling system.
Ed Akers, Network Rail’s Industry Partnership Director for ECDP, expressed satisfaction with the progress made. "This is a significant step forward for two strategically important fleets," he said. "The successful completion of dynamic testing demonstrates the hard work and dedication of our partners."
Aaron Meakin, GTR’s Senior Programme Delivery Manager for ERTMS, highlighted the importance of this achievement. "The Class 387 will be the first major commuter fleet in the UK to have ETCS retrofitted," he said. "We are excited to complete the work on the remaining units at our depot in Hornsey."
