Totton station access improved

Accessibility for people with disabilities has been improved after years of complaints at Totton station near Southampton.

To reach the step-free platform, passengers travelling west have had to continue to Brockenhurst, change trains and return eastwards to Totton to leave the station.

A new footpath has been built to connect the westbound platform to Totton High Street, providing a route for people using wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs.

Peter Williams, customer and commercial director for South Western Railway, said he understood the need for passengers to be able to travel more independently.

He said: “This new level footway will make journeys more accessible and convenient for customers using the station.”

Lulu Bowerman, Hampshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways, called it a “much-needed scheme.”

Existing paths have been resurfaced and lighting has been improved. It was funded by the council, Network Rail, SWR and the Department for Transport’s Access for All fund.
