FirstGroup calls for a 'Generation Rail' to boost future train travel

First Rail has unveiled ambitious plans to attract a new generation of rail users. The operator, which runs several major UK rail franchises including Avanti West Coast (which it runs partly with Trenitalia under a government contract), Great Western Railway and South Western Railway has released a report outlining strategies to encourage young people to choose train travel over other modes of transport.

The report, titled 'Generation Rail', highlights a complex picture of rail travel in the UK. While passenger numbers have increased significantly in recent years, particularly with the opening of the Elizabeth Line, the report highlights areas where there is still untapped potential.

Young people are a key demographic, with railcard usage soaring and driving licence ownership declining.

However, research conducted by First Rail has identified key areas for improvement. Reliability emerged as a major concern among young people, with many citing it as a reason for avoiding train travel. Reliability has been a concern across the industry for several years. In the most recent passenger rail performance metric released by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), 68% of trains arrived at their destinations on-time. Ongoing industrial action and timetable alterations have also contributed to these concerns.

The report also highlighted that whilst willing to pay for fares, young passengers expect value for money and consistent amenities such as Wi-Fi and charging points.

To address these issues, 'Generation Rail' is proposing a range of measures, including enhanced Railcard benefits, improved timetabling, and higher standards for train amenities. The creation of a Young Persons Advisory Panel is also recommended to ensure young people's voices are heard in the decision-making process.

Steve Montgomery, Managing Director of First Rail, emphasised the need for collaboration across the rail industry to deliver the improvements young people desire. "Generation Rail is about looking to the future," he said. "We need to work together to ensure the reliable, consistent and value for money service we all want is delivered and expanded."

“It needs whole industry solutions – that means operating companies, the government, Network Rail and trade unions – working together on common sense reforms to ensure the reliable, consistent and value for money service we all want is delivered and expanded.”
