Passengers travelling between Cardiff, Manchester and Holyhead are set to enjoy quicker journeys thanks to a collaborative effort between Network Rail and Transport for Wales (TfW).

Dozens of speed restrictions on the Marches Line have been lifted, allowing trains to travel faster. This work has already cut journey times by around 10 minutes between Cardiff and Manchester, with further improvements expected from December.

The project involved removing 38 speed restrictions and making signalling adjustments. Both organisations have praised the partnership, highlighting the positive impact on passengers and the economy.

TfW anticipates more reliable services because of the changes, while Network Rail is exploring similar improvements on other routes.

Network Rail Wales and Borders programme manager Alex Hinshelwood said: “After three years of hard work and collaboration, the line-speed improvement project on the Marches Line has been commissioned.

“This allows all trains between Hereford, Crewe and North Wales to run at the same speed, bringing significant journey time improvements in time for the December 2024 timetable change.

Transport for Wales planning and performance director Colin Lea said: “Working closely with our partners in Network Rail, we are delighted to have agreed these key line-speed improvements on the Marches line.”
