Five types of diesel to join LSL’s historic tour

Locomotive Services Limited, through its InterCity operation, has announced August 10 as the date for the first multi-traction tour to use five types of ex-BR diesel heritage locomotives.

The ‘North West Wanderer’ starts at Crewe behind 50050 Fearless, which will work as far as Carlisle.

From there ‘Peak’ 45118 The Royal Artilleryman will take the train to Preston via the Settle-Carlisle Line.

The Class 45 will then give way to Class 40 D213 Andania, which will work via Hellifield, Wennington, Carnforth and back to Preston before handing over to 37401 Mary Queen of Scots and 37409 Loch Awe.

The Class 37s will then work a circular run via Bolton, Manchester Victoria, Rochdale, Copy Pit and back to Preston.

Finally, the last leg back to Crewe along the West Coast Main Line will be behind one of LSL’s two pairs of Class 20s - either green 20096/107 or Railfreight grey 20118/132.

The routes being covered were familiar track for the different types on the train in the BR era.

The last BR Class 50s ran in 1994, the Class 45s were retired in 1989, and the Class 40s in 1988, although privately-owned preserved examples have run on Network Rail in recent years on charters.

The ‘20s’ and ‘37s’ have lingered on in the post-privatisation years with a few operators.
