Manchester backs smart ticketing

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has pledged its commitment to smart ticketing, following the termination in August of a contract with supplier Atos.

Revised plans for ‘smart’ travel on the network include the introduction of a smart phone app, enabling passengers to buy and download Metrolink tickets through their smartphones, and upgrading the network’s ticket machines to allow the use of contactless bank cards to buy printed tickets.

The ‘get me there’ Metrolink app will allow passengers to buy and download e-tickets onto their smartphones before boarding. Details of the app will be published as it is made available.

Once again a solution that ignores the fact that there is a significant proportion of the population that do not have a mobile phone, do not have a mobile phone that can run an app or do not have the ability to use apps on their mobile phone. I know that my parents, my wife and I will die out like the dinosaurs in due course but until then smartphones are not a universal panacea.
